Circle K Stations in Florida Will Sell Cannabis

Floridians will be able to fill up with gas and cannabis at the same time, with Circle K announcing a partnership with Green Thumb Industries. Sales will begin with ten stores in a move that will help cannabis go mainstream. This isn't the first time Circle K has expressed interest in cannabis, with some stores already selling CBD. The chain also expressed interest in other cannabis partnerships.

Cannabis at Circle K stations

Green Thumb Industries Inc, one of the largest U.S. cannabis producers, has signed an agreement with Circle K, a global chain of convenience stores and gas stations, to sell licensed cannabis at its gas stations in Florida. The partnership will begin next year, and cannabis will initially be available for purchase at 10 of the 600 Circle K locations in Florida.

The deal is unusual, given that legal cannabis has so far only been sold in designated cannabis stores or dispensaries. By selling cannabis, which is still federally illegal, at Circle K gas stations, where consumers buy staple products such as snacks and cigarettes, this type of partnership could help bring cannabis into the mainstream.

Available at Circle K Stations with a Rise Express

Green Thumb products will be available at “RISE Express” pharmacies affiliated with Circle K gas stations. Since Florida is one of the few states where cannabis can only be legally sold for medical use, purchases are limited to Florida residents with medical cannabis cards. Currently, that’s about 700,000 people.

Under a new partnership between the companies, starting next year, cannabis will be sold at 10 “RISE Express” dispensaries with separate entrances from the Circle K gas stations, Chicago-based Green Thumb announced Wednesday.

Products to Go on Sale

Among the products that will be on sale at Circle K locations are cannabis flowers, pre-rolls, jelly beans, and e-cigarettes. Green Thumb will produce the products on its 28-acre cultivation site, which is expected to be ready by the end of 2022, Bloomberg reported.

Gas stations seem to be a good place for cannabis, as they are where many Americans buy drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. Some gas stations have already taken up cannabis distribution, selling CBD products that contain small concentrations of THC. Circle K is among this group.

Circle K Has an Appetite for More Cannabis Partnerships

Ben Kovler, founder and CEO of Green Thumb, said Circle K has an appetite to partner with cannabis brands in other states. For example, in Canada, where cannabis for recreational use is legal, the chain has an agreement with cannabis retailer Fire & Flower Holdings Corp., under which Fire & Flower cannabis stores are opened at Circle K stations.
