Digital cannabis application for medical patients to launch in Puerto Rico

A mobile application specialized in real time connection between cannabis patients and clinics will be launched in Puerto Rico. Furthermore, it's expected that this app will connect with other services, providing its user with dispensary information and cannabis availability. This is the first time an app like this one is developed and it shows the potential of cannabis and digital platforms.

Strain, a Puerto Rican startup that will be part of the eighth generation of the Parallel 18 incubator, developed the first and only application and technology platform within the medical cannabis industry. The app provides a direct connection between medical cannabis clinics and their patients in real time.

With an investment of approximately $150,000, the innovative digital platform provides each medical cannabis clinic with a customized “white-label” application with each clinic’s logo and brand identity that can be easily identified on the APP Store and Google Play Store. In addition, it integrates essential functionality for medical cannabis sales and marketing, and patient service and retention.

Strain is the first company to create a real-time cannabis app

“At the moment, clinics have to be more creative and not only focus on sales, but also on finding solutions to automate and optimize the processes that are tied to it,” said Manuel Ramirez, CEO of Strain. He has spent the last ten years of his career developing software and products and identifying the problems companies face in managing their processes.

Ramirez added that with the Strain application, medical cannabis clinic owners will be able to centralize marketing, sales, retention and customer service efforts on one platform, making the application unique within the medical cannabis industry.

In addition, patients will have real-time access to the most up-to-date dispensary information. They will also benefit from purchase history and reward points within their patient profile, among others. Also, the application is synchronized in real-time with the dispensary’s point of sale (POS) and with all the stored information of its patients. This offers a new solution to the cannabis industry by eliminating the need to manually update this information, as is the case with other platforms on the market.

“Despite the existence of online directories and systems that allow product ordering, these platforms lack the functionality to achieve a real-time connection between the clinic and its patients. That is why we have designed the Strain application to meet that need within the market,” added the young Puerto Rican Ramirez.

The new cannabis app will also provide information about cannabis availability

Dispensaries that purchase their customized app with Strain could increase their sales by up to 30% through additional channels, as well as obtain metrics on their patients’ preferences and consumption. The platform keeps product menus, rewards points, and patient profiles updated and synchronized at the dispensary POS. This results in increased sales, shopping cart conversion rates, and performance of technicians dispensing the product, so-called “budtenders.”

Strain also offers solutions to the marketing and promotional constraints faced by cannabis clinics on social media networks. The app provides the ability to connect with patients through communication channels such as text messaging, push notifications, and in-application promotional announcements.

The application also provides the option of applying for and renewing a cannabis license and an express check-in system, which speeds up the process of registering the patient at each visit.

In just four months, Strain has secured important business agreements with leading international companies in the cannabis industry, such as BioTrack, Hypur, MJ Freeway, among others. Currently, Strain has a total of twenty five (25) dispensaries located around the island.
