Health Minister pushes for Thailand cannabis industry

Thailand’s Public Health Minister has proposed farmers be allowed to grow cannabis plants under a joint scheme with the state. Deputy Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, said he has signed a draft law on allowing farmers to grow cannabis. The regulation will be examined by the Council of State and make Thailand a world leader in medical and industrial cannabis production and research.

The Thailand cannabis industry was the first in the east to be authorized for medical cannabis production last December. The project goes far beyond the authorization for controlled use.

Statements by the new Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed that the goal of the current government is to make Thailand a world leader in medical and industrial cannabis production and research.

The country’s climate is particularly good for outdoor cannabis cultivation, and the prospect of a new sector of agricultural development is seen as a means of improving the economic conditions of the many farmers, including small and medium-sized farms.

Only medical cannabis to be expected in Thailand’s cannabis industry

The prohibitionist legislative framework for recreational use has remained unchanged at the moment. All indicators seem to be moving towards the authorization for only medical cannabis.

This has not gone unnoticed by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). It was intervened through former Thai President Viroj Sumyai, who last August threatened serious repercussions on Thailand’s access to medicine. Therefore, Thailand’s cannabis industry would be in violation of international treaties.

The threat appears empty as other countries like Canada and Uruguay have already regulated the cannabis market for recreational use.

It seems that Sumyai, now a member of the board, hastened to declare that the INCB has already notified North American countries of the violation.

Thailand’s cannabis industry still requires some amendments

In any case, the Thai government’s willingness to proceed at a fast pace was publicly certified a few days ago by the launch of the government website dedicated to medical cannabis.

In the same hours, the Health Minister informed that he is looking for the correct wording for the amendment that would allow the cultivation of six cannabis plants per family.

The reform of cannabis legislation in Thailand is progressing swiftly, hoping that it will also include a complete revision of the current penalties for use and imprisonment.
