Hemp is seducing the cosmetics industry

Hemp and cannabis are carving out niches for themselves in many diverse fields. One of the fastest growing among them is in cosmetics. There, it is being used for its unique properties that help fight aging and reduce inflammation. This is seeing it used in everything from hair-care products and bath bombs, right through to moisturizing creams, essential oils, masks, serums, soaps, and scrubs.

Known mainly for its “recreational” use but also for its medical virtues, cannabis and hemp have gradually carved out a niche of its own in the world of cosmetics! In the form of serums, oils, or creams, there are now many products based on CBD–a plant-derived from cannabis.

Cannabis, THC, CBD, hemp, and… beauty products?

Hemp is a species of the Cannabaceae family… but it doesn’t have much to do with the so-called “recreational” cannabis (or marijuana). What is the difference? THC, a psychotropic molecule, considered a narcotic, and illegal in many places. It is usually treated differently to CBD as the THC level is higher than 0.2%. Legal CBD usually contains THC levels lower than 0.2%.

If recreational and therapeutic cannabis contains about 15 % THC, hemp – with less than 0,2 % THC belongs to the 2nd category. In cosmetics another component is exploited, cannabidiol (CBD), a molecule without narcotic and legal effect. The strong points of hemp? A legal THC rate and a high content of CBD. A natural ingredient that has been gaining interest recently.

What are the beauty benefits of hemp?

What about beauty products? It is hemp seeds that are attracting the interest of the cosmetic world! An oil rich in omega 3 and 6, vitamins, and minerals are extracted from it… used to sublimate the skin, hair, and body. The benefits of hemp oil? Its moisturizing and very nourishing, but also anti-aging, healing, and anti-inflammatory. So many benefits that have allowed it to be used in the composition of moisturizing creams, essential oils for home care, hair oil, bath bombs, masks, serums, soaps, or scrubs. In short, we can now consume hemp on a daily basis … in several formats!
