Adult-use cannabis sales in the small U.S. state of Illinois have hit a new record high after marking an increase of 12 percent from 2021 sales and 131 percent from 2020. In total, Illinois, which has 113 licensed dispensaries in the state serving a population of 12.7 million, hit cannabis sales exceeding $1.55 billion in 2022.
Clearly, cannabis sales are booming for businesses in Illinois. But it is not the only state to have witnessed such a positive uptake of legal cannabis. To keep track of the highs (and lows) as news breaks, download our free cannabis news app.
In a press release announcing the figure, the Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker said that when he signed the state’s legalization bill into law in 2019, the administration “set an ambitious goal: to create the most equitable and economically successful cannabis industry in the nation.”
Last year, the governor said, the first adult-use cannabis dispensaries run by people who have had legal encounters with cannabis opened, which Pritzker said “sets the stage for an even stronger 2023.”
Last year, just three new adult-use cannabis dispensaries opened, against another 189 conditionally licensed dispensaries that are still in the process of receiving their full dispensary licenses from state regulators.
Mario Treto, Jr, secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), noted that 2022 marks the second consecutive year that the state’s cannabis sales have experienced “record growth.”
“We are excited about what the future holds for the nation’s fairest cannabis industry. We are optimistic that the industry will only continue to thrive in 2023 as we welcome more dispensaries to Illinois,” said Mario Treto, Jr.
Statistics compiled by the IDFPR show that 2021 cannabis sales totals were all surpassed in November 2022. A total of 36,435,129 items were sold at adult-use cannabis dispensaries in Illinois last year, a 20 percent increase over 2021.
Additionally, cannabis sales to Illinois residents totaled $1,073,132,436, an increase of nearly 14 percent over 2021, while sales to out-of-state residents totaled $479,192,383, an increase of nearly 10 percent over 2021.
