Innovation Hub starts up its first hemp-related company

Jakob Zwinderman, the project manager of The Innovation Hub Oost-Groningen (IHOG), has just announced the opening of two new companies in Veendam in January 2020. The aim of the company is to develop the market and create employment in the region. The raw hemp materials, which the company will produce, will be used for the construction industry as fire-resistant hemp plates.

The Innovation Hub Oost-Groningen (IHOG) in Veendam will open its first two companies in January 2020. One of them is a hemp-related company.

The hemp-related company will concentrate on the manufacturing of insulating and fire-resistant hemp plates for the construction industry.

The other company will explore the possibilities for the production and marketing of biodiesel based on a liquid released during the processing of starch potatoes by Avebe.

Innovation Hub aims to create more job opportunities

The Innovation Hub opened in April on the initiative of a group of former Pekelder scientists and entrepreneurs. The aim is to create employment in the region.

The ‘hub’ is supported by HempFlax in Pekela, and the Veendammer companies Nedmag and Avebe.

The aim is also to develop and market new applications for raw hemp materials, magnesium chloride and starch potatoes that they process.

In addition to the three companies, the IHOG receives support from the Hanzehogeschool and the University of Groningen.

The three raw materials of the companies concerned are all present in probably the first product to enter the market as a result of the intervention of the IHOG: the fire-resistant and insulating hemp plate.

“The hemp, of course, comes from HempFlax, Nedmag’s fire-resistant magnesium, and Avebe’s starches,” said project manager Jakob Zwinderman.

Innovation Hub has come a long way

He expects the companies to welcome the first 10 employees in the new year. According to him, there are already contacts with a large contractor and a housing corporation before the purchase.

“We’ve come a long way, but there’s nothing on paper yet. That’s why I don’t mention names yet,” said Zwinderman.“In the meantime, the hub also wants to strengthen its network. To this end, it will organize lectures for select groups of guests. Professors who are normally present on international stages will then come to Veendam to speak.”
