Most Americans Plan to Use or Gift Cannabis on Valentine’s Day

According to a new survey, the majority of American adults aged 21 and older plan to gift their loved ones cannabis this Valentine’s Day (or at least include it in their plans). And here’s an interesting fact: parents are more likely to use or gift cannabis than their peers without children. Another finding includes the 19 million who will forgo champagne on Valentine’s Day in favor of cannabis.

Forget roses or chocolates! According to a new survey, the majority of American adults aged 21 and older plan to gift their loved one’s cannabis this coming Valentine’s Day (or at least include it in their plans). And here’s an interesting fact: parents are more likely to use or gift cannabis than their peers without children.

The Valentine’s Cannabis Survey

The survey, conducted by Wired Research and commissioned by Verano Holdings, a multi-state cannabis producer, surveyed 961 Americans and was conducted between January 24, 2023, and January 29, 2023.

The data obtained show that as legalization continues in the United States, attitudes and consumption behavior toward cannabis are changing. There is growing interest in cannabis, its acceptance, and the number of consumers who use it for non-medical purposes. Key findings of the survey are:

  • 61% of American adults plan to include cannabis in their Valentine’s Day plans.
  • 19 million American adults will forgo champagne on Valentine’s Day in favor of cannabis.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 American adults believe cannabis improves their sexual performance.
  • Men are more likely than women (66% vs. 57%) to include cannabis in their Valentine’s Day plans.
  • Generation Z and millennials are significantly more likely than Generation X and the baby boomer generation to include cannabis in their Valentine’s Day plans (70% vs. 57%).

Availability and Legality Driving Valentine’s Day Interest

The availability of legal cannabis may be driving the increased interest in cannabis on Valentine’s Day, as the survey found that American adults in the Northeast were the most likely to use or give cannabis this year (66% compared to 55% in the Midwest, 61% in the West and 63% in the South).

Regional interest in cannabis can be attributed to several states in the Northeast, including Connecticut, New York, Vermont and New Jersey, which have legalized adult-use cannabis over the past year.

Surprise: Older Generations More Likely to Partake in Romantic Cannabis

The surprising finding is that parents are more than likely to give gifts or use cannabis for Valentine’s Day compared to their peers who do not have children.

Dr. Shannon Chavez, a psychologist and sexologist at Beverly Hills, in an interview with the study authors, said: “Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity for couples to try something new together and try a more dynamic and less formulaic approach to intimacy that cannabis can inspire.”
