Cannabis is a crop that differs from other horticultural crops. In order to produce high-value cannabis, it is necessary to understand how environmental factors can be manipulated to enhance the final product quality. The Philips GreenPower LED toplighting, presented by the company Signify, would allow growers to increase their production and could control heat and light separately.
The cannabis plant is very sensitive to light and color, aspects that if not well controlled affect its productivity. But what are the actual impacts of using lights for cannabis production?
Cannabis cultivation has taken off in recent years, so much so that more and more world-class events are taking place around this industry. However, research to improve and increase production is not lagging behind either.
Cannabis is one of the world’s most talked-about topics. Medical cannabis is a sector that brings profit to the cannabis industry.
One potentially useful hemp news tool is Hemp.im, which focuses on the latest in cannabis news, social changes, economic trends, and medical information.
Several studies using lights for cannabis have demonstrated that increasing light intensity can have a positive effect on plant photosynthesis and growth.
The company Signify, one of the leaders in the lighting market presented the Philips GreenPower LED toplighting.
These types of light for cannabis would allow growers to increase their production by understanding that they could control heat and light separately and thus have greater results since the cannabis plant is very sensitive to these two components.
“The right light can be instrumental in producing the highest quality, medical-grade cannabis,” said Eelke Hempenius, Global Segment Marketing Manager for Signify Bio-based Compounds. “With our expertise in lighting, we can help customers create the ideal light intensity and color spectrum to ensure the best conditions and improve production.”
Plant growth, morphology, and metabolism can be manipulated by changing light quality.
For example, it is known that blue light decreases internode length making plants more compact. Also, several studies have demonstrated that far-red and green wavelengths induce stem and leaf elongation.
By using LED light, the climate in the greenhouse can be controlled more easily. LED light comes with almost no heat. Therefore, the climate can be better directed. This results in consistent quality with the right composition of compounds, the same quantity all year round to simplify logistical planning and ensure reliable manufacturing.
More research is required to fully understand cannabis behavior under artificial lighting.
However, enough research information is available to show LED lamps are the best light source to improve cannabis production and quality.
In the meantime, such developments about lights for cannabis allow cannabis to have a much brighter future in industries such as the medical industry, where the product must meet specific production and quality characteristics in order to be used in different processes.
