Report on the US Cannabis Industry

According to a new report by Leafly and Whitney Economics, the legal US cannabis industry is now employing nearly twice as many full-time workers as in 2019. In January 2022, there were already 428,059 Americans working full-time in the cannabis sector, up from 321,000 in 2020.

As in any sector, managers, warehouse workers, programmers, marketers, and salespeople are needed, as well as lawyers and public relations specialists. In addition, biologists, chemists, farmers, food and beverage experts, horticulturists, and client advisors who have experience advising on cannabis products. These are just some of the sought-after professionals in the US cannabis industry.

US Cannabis Industry Experiences Job Growth Across the Board

According to the report, job growth is evident in all three major areas in the US cannabis industry, namely cultivation, product testing for cannabinoids and terpenes, and retail. There are also opportunities for manufacturers of various equipment, including agricultural equipment and lighting, chemical analysis equipment, and merchandising materials.

Efficient, large-scale cultivation of high-quality cannabis is one of the highest-paying occupations, with a vice president of cultivation earning an average of $256,300 a year. CFOs are also in high demand and certainly won’t complain about earnings.

State-by-State Legalization Demands Specialization in Legal and Marketing

Branding and marketing are probably among some of the most important areas in the US cannabis industry. Any new state that legalizes cannabis offers a wide-open market for companies looking to build brand recognition and gain positive customer feedback.

The lack of federal legalization of the US cannabis industry means that no national brands have yet emerged. For now, each state has specific restrictions on how, when, and where cannabis can be advertised, so expertise is needed in all areas of this new industry to conduct business according to industry guidelines.

US Cannabis Industry Presents New Opportunities

Experts have calculated that the US cannabis industry sales reached $33 billion in global sales in 2022. The average salary of legal cannabis store managers increased by 6% across all cannabis companies.

Cannabis companies are looking for experienced cultivation experts with proven experience working in outdoor cultivation and large-scale indoor facilities in multiple locations. However, it is also possible to find entry-level jobs in the US cannabis industry, such as harvesting assistance and post-harvest flower trimming.
