An Argentine veterinary is prescribing cannabis as a treatment for pets

An Argentine veterinarian is showing the world the benefits that cannabis could have, not only in humans but also in pets. The veterinarian is prescribing cannabis as treatment for a series of illnesses both in dogs and cats, after managing to secure the support of the Veterinary Association. It is expected that this initiative will help to push forward the legalization of cannabis in the country.

Discussions about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis oil and cannabis-based products are not new. A veterinarian from Neuquén, Argentina, decided to open the first clinic in the region specializing in the treatment of chronically ill pets with CBD oil.

The Argentine veterinarian will not sell the substance freely, but will prescribe its use to reduce anxiety attacks and to alleviate chronic pain, cancer and even epilepsy in dogs and cats.

José Massabó is the head of VET365 and, since the coronavirus pandemic began causing disarray all around the globe, he has used his social networks to give free veterinary advice to his followers throughout Latin America.

If you want to know more about cannabis, how cannabis could be used not only in humans but also in pets, how this revolutionary plant could bring a series of new and effective treatments to current diseases, and to find out the latest hemp news, download the Hemp.im mobile application.

Cannabis as a viable treatment for pets

In that context, the veterinarian transmitted a series of conversations with other animal health professionals, who joined his talks. Thus, he contacted veterinary doctors Paula Lezcano and Facundo Ponzo, who have been studying and working with medical cannabis for years.

After learning about the subject, Massabó called them to his veterinary clinic with a specialized office. “At the veterinary clinic, we are not going to sell CBD oil or its derivatives, but we are going to prescribe it and encourage self-cultivation so that the carers can provide the oil to their pets,” said the head of VET365.

The clinic also has a neurology office and a physical therapy and rehabilitation office, which work in an integrated manner for the treatment and follow-up of cases of pets that require the use of this substance.

Currently, people in Argentina can use cannabis legally in small quantities and in special locations. Still, free cannabis consumption, even for medical purposes, it’s not legal in the country. Although, changes may be on sight, as current surveys have shown that the vast majority of the Argentine population is in favor of using cannabis as a medical treatment.

The Argentinian Veterinary Association is supporting the cannabis-based treatment

“We already informed the Veterinary Association, which gave us its support,” Massabó said, clarifying that they did not have to process other permits because veterinarians, like doctors, are authorized to prescribe cannabis as a natural medicine for some illness.

“There are a lot of pets that have been treated for quite some time with cannabis oil. There are also many people who use cannabis independently, because they take it and give it to their dogs,” Massabó said, adding that there are other veterinarians who prescribe it but not in such an exposed way.

In his opinion, setting up the first cannabis veterinary clinic in the area allows him to generate statistics on the number of pets treated with this revolutionary substance. In addition, he can accompany the fight for the legalization of cannabis for medical and therapeutic purposes in those cases who need it the most, whether humans or animals.
