Medical cannabis market opportunities in Brazil

Federal Deputy Paulo Teixeira spoke about his experience with the Global Commission on Drug Policy at Cannabis Thinking on March, 7th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Among the most popular speakers, the lawyer Emílio Figueiredo, founder of Reforma, a group of lawyers who work for free for patients who need the authorization of Justice to cultivate at home. The second part of the event was practical.

Medical cannabis is the newest challenge on the market since December when Avisa regulated the marketing of the product. The sector and the countless opportunities it presents are still unknown to most Brazilians. It was with this in mind that The Green Hub, in partnership with CIVI-CO, organized the Cannabis Thinking event.

This Saturday (March, 7th), the event managed to gather in just one morning politicians, businessmen, lawyers and researchers who have been in the area for much longer. They were not in-depth presentations to a specialized audience, but an introduction of the role of each of them in the production chain and in what they contribute to society. The entire audience saw 11 lectures in four hours.

Good news

The public has heard the good news. Federal Deputy Paulo Teixeira, today president of the chamber committee, charged with studying the best way to market the market, warned that the bill will soon be presented. “The bill will be delivered in April,” he warned the audience. He also said what everyone wanted to hear. “Planting in Brazil is necessary for everyone to have access to medicine.” Shortly before, former President Fernando Henrique spoke of Brazil’s need to educate the population and inform them, that prohibition is not the way.

Stevens Hehen of the D’Or Institute for Research and Teaching said there is evidence of scientific evidence of the effect of medical cannabis. “Brazil has research,” he said. He showed the work done at the institute and publications in medical journals by Elisaldo Carlini, professor emeritus at the Federal University of São Paulo, on medical cannabis. Entourage Phytolab, which has been on the market since 2015, spoke about the clinical trials of drugs underway in the laboratory.

Luciana Guimarães went up to tell how, at 46 years old, she has in her resume six businesses set up in the health area. “Entrepreneurship is something natural in people,” she said. “You look away, you see a problem, and you want to solve it. That’s how I got the idea for different businesses.”

In the end, she gave a message: “In my experience, when you are going to work with innovation in an uncertain market, it is important to resort to formulas that do not change, I mean the direct connection with the other.”

King of the judiciary becomes enterprising

Among the most popular speakers, the lawyer Emílio Figueiredo, founder of Reforma, a group of lawyers who work for free for patients who need the authorization of Justice to cultivate at home. He attends people with no resources to import cannabis medicine.

The lawyer, who today has a consultancy for companies, recalled the importance of the role of patient associations in advancing the market. The regulation of Anvisa of medicinal cannabis was the first step to meet the real needs of patients and families. There is a lack of affordable prices.

Buying medical cannabis of unknown origin is a risk

With a busy schedule – of consultations, events, classes, and enterprises – the speaker and neurosurgeon Pedro Pietro did not attend but sent a 15-minute video where he told about his experience with medical cannabis. Pietro was one of the first doctors to prescribe in São Paulo. He also warned about the danger of parallel drugs for patients without resources to import. “They don’t know what they’re taking.”

The second part of the event was practical. The participants were challenged to represent in a role all the players of medical cannabis. In the playful exercise, they used pen, pasta, magazines, and glue. They analyzed the main risks and advantages. They exchanged cards, experiences and also had fun. Who really left the event happy was Marcel Grecco, founder of The Green Hub. When he saw the crowded hall he commented: “It was planned to show the whole cannabis market and I think it was done great.”
