Sante Fe Teams up with Argentina Agritech to research the medicinal use of Cannabis

The Argentine province of Santa Fe, through the Ministries of Health and of Production, Science and Technology, signed an agreement with the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) for research on the medicinal use of Cannabis.

The objective of this agreement is to develop scientific evidence on different health problems, which are not addressed by conventional medical treatments, for which Cannabis and its derivatives are increasingly prescribed by doctors.

In addition, it seeks to rigorously clarify the therapeutic applications of the Cannabis plant, as well as its derivatives.

Argentina’s Sante Fe Teams up with AgriTech to Research Cannabis

In addition, the research to be completed in Santa Fe seeks to evaluate the efficacy of each therapeutic indication for cannabis. This would promote adequate use and the universalization of access to treatment; to know potential side effects; to establish the safety and limitations for their use, and to promote the care and improvement of the quality of life of the population.

In this regard, the Minister of Production, Science and Technology of the province, Daniel Costamagna, expressed that the signing of this agreement “has a strong interdisciplinary imprint between INTA, LIF and the Santa Fe Ministries of Health and Science for the design, development, and implementation of joint actions in the research and production of medicinal Cannabis”.

Likewise, he added “the work plan will allow training through INTA professionals. In addition, it will create research groups in order to generate experimental trials aimed at an integral, vertical and transversal traceability of the cultivation for therapeutic purposes”.

“This is a first step for the province of Santa Fe to generate technical knowledge to achieve a medicinal quality crop”, finally emphasized Costamagna.

The Whole Process to Guarantee Better Canabis Access in Argentina

For her part, the Minister of Health, Sonia Martorano, highlighted that through inter-ministerial and inter-institutional work, “rigorous research oriented to the development of Cannabis for therapeutic purposes will be carried out in Santa Fe. From the selection of the most suitable seeds, to the selection of technologies and the whole process. That is to say that the Santa Fe will select which cannabis seeds to buy, which will be sown in INTA’s lands and will be under its care”.

“Subsequently – emphasized Martorano – the Ministry of Health, through the LIF, will not only intervene in the fractionation of the drug, which is something it is already doing, but also in the production of pharmacological compounds derived from Cannabis. This is a very important step for people who have some health problem since accessibility and availability in the public sphere will be expanded”.

Finally, the director of the Regional Center of INTA Santa Fe, Alejandro Longo, expressed his enthusiasm and considered that “the signing of the agreement is a first and great step for the cultivation of this plant for medicinal purposes, which will allow formalizing and applying the regulations in force in this regard in an articulated and safe way, between different levels of the State, as it is already being done in other provinces of the country”.
